Many young athletes leave sport in their early teens. Too much training, too little rest, and too much pressure are some of the reasons. Burnout doesn't happen overnight, and it's preventable.
Warning signs
- Tiredness that doesn't go away with rest.
- Performance that stalls or drops, even with more training.
- More aches, overuse injuries, or illnesses than usual.
- Dreading practice, or no longer enjoying a sport they loved.
- Mood changes, irritability, or trouble sleeping.
What sport medicine experts recommend
- Delay specializing in one sport all year until mid to late adolescence for most sports. Sampling many sports builds a broader base and lowers the risk of overuse injuries.
- Take at least 1 to 2 days off from organized sport every week.
- Take time away from their main sport during the year, about 2 to 3 months in total.
- Watch the total load. A busy season, a second team, and a growth spurt can add up fast.
Keep it fun
Young athletes stay in sport because they enjoy it, feel they're improving, and have friends there. Ask "Did you have fun?" more often than "Did you win?" and let them help shape their own goals.
When to get help
If fatigue hangs on for weeks, see your doctor to rule out illness, and make sure your athlete is eating enough for the training they're doing. If they've lost their love for sport, take a break, and talk to their coach about adjusting the plan.
